Steve Simon, who has run the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells as its tournament director since 2004, has been selected as Stacey Allaster’s successor as the WTA's Chief.

Simon, who was hired at Indian Wells in 1989 after spending six years in a sponsorship role with Adidas, should be full time at the WTA by the end of November.
"I am humbled, and at the same time, very excited about the opportunity that has been presented to me by the board," Simon said in a statement released by the WTA. "I will be focused on building upon the successful platforms that have been put in place by my predecessors, Stacey Allaster and Larry Scott, with a sole focus on driving excellence and innovation, while creating a premium experience for the fans."
The news was applauded by players, former players and pundits alike.
Simon had the helm during a period of unprecedented innovation at Indian Wells, which has elevated the tournament to top status among the non-Grand Slams. He also is responsible for engineering the return of Serena Williams to the fold. The Williams sisters had boycotted the event ever since a much-publicized racial incident in 2001.
"When I returned to Indian Wells this year, Steve could not have been more helpful, professional and supportive," Serena Williams said in a statement. "I know how much he cares about the opinions of the players. He's a good listener and he has our best interests in mind."
Simon was also in consideration for the role of ATP CEO when the organization was in the process of replacing Brad Drewett in 2013.
"Steve Simon is the right person for the job," said WTA founder Billie Jean King. "His track record is marked by success. He is thoughtful, respectful and he has excellent business judgment."
Simon will carry out his duties at the WTA while simultaneously finishing out his work at the BNP Paribas Open until November 30.
