The World No. 1 defeated Lopez for the seventh time in seven lifetime encounters, breaking the Spaniard’s serve three times on 15 opportunities and saving all three break points he faced.
The Serb won 16 of 21 second serve return points against Lopez and was in control from start to finish.
With the win, Djokovic has now won 35 of his last 36 matches on Chinese soil. He will face either Richard Gasquet or Bernard Tomic in the quarterfinals.
Lopez, a three-time semifinalist in Shanghai, falls to 32-24 with the loss.
