Petra Kvitova got her Australian Open preparation off to a winning start by claiming the Apia International title in Sydney, Australia.
But she was made to work for her 15th career title by fellow big serving Czech Karolina Pliskova.
ATP: Can Wawrinka Shine in Melbourne Again?
"It's always tough to play a final," Kvitova said. "I'm glad I stand here as the winner of this tournament. It's always going to stay as a great memory in my mind."
Kvitova reached the final by earning a revenge win over defending champion Tsvetana Pironkova who ousted her in the same stage of the tournament last year.
The final went back and forth in momentum between both big hitters. Pliskova seized an early break in the opening set before later serving for it up 5-4.
Kvitova countered by smacking in two forehand winners to eventually level the set. Kvitova then took that set in a tiebreak before going ahead a break in the second.
Pliskova got back on level terms to force a tiebreak again. However, Kvitova proved too tough as she closed out the 7-6(5), 7-6(6) victory.
Despite the loss, Pliskova's efforts in Sydney this week will soon propel her into the WTA top 20 for the first time in her career.
Kvitova, seeking her first Australian Open title, will open against a qualifier next week.
