Jet-lagged and down 5-0 in the first set of her Hopman Cup opener to Flavia Pennetta, Serena Williams called on a ballkid to fetch her an espresso.
It was just what she needed.
After dropping the next game, Serena’s on-court beverage was delivered, and she didn’t look back, taking down Pennetta, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, an effective dose of high-powered coffee to go with that third-set bagel.
"It's miracle coffee," Williams joked after the match, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. "I am a coffee drinker. I didn't have mine this morning and I was just feeling it, so I just had to get some coffee into me.”
Williams claimed the jet lag of a long trip to Australia had made the espresso a necessity.
"I just asked them to get me a shot of espresso,” she said. “I asked them if it was legal, because I've never done it before. But I needed to wake up - it's just the jet lag. It gets you all the time."
