Andy Murray maintained his sizzling form at the Valencia Open on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jurgen Melzer. Murray, who won the title in Vienna this week, is currently clinging to the last spot in the race to London.

The world No. 10 won his seventh straight match against Melzer without having suffered a loss, serving 10 aces and breaking six times on eleven opportunities to overcome some service difficulties of his own.

Murray traded breaks with Melzer in the first set before claiming the opener, and he was broken in the first game of the second set before rallying to set up a second-round encounter with Italy’s Fabio Fognini.

David Ferrer, who is trailing behind Murray in the race to London by only 110 points, notched his 50th win of 2014 and moved within two victories of 600 wins for his career with a 6-3, 7-5 takedown of Andreas Seppi.

"It makes me proud of my career," said the Spaniard, according to the ATP’s website. "Sometimes I look back at my career and I feel proud about what I've done, and if I get to 600 victories it will be another reason to be happy."

Ferrer remains on course for a crucial semifinal matchup with Murray if the seeds hold in Valencia.
