Borna Coric earned the biggest win of his career at the Swiss Indoors against Rafael Nadal. Learn more about this rising young ATP star.
ATP: Coric Stuns Nadal in Basel Quarterfinals
1. Vital Statistics: Coric was born on November 14th, 1996 in Zagreb, Croatia. He still resides there.
2. Early Days: Coric started playing tennis at age five when he saw his father play the sport.
3. Junior Glory: In 2013, Coric made it to the semifinals in the junior events of both the Australian Open and French Open. Coric won the boys' US Open title. That result propelled him to the No. 1 junior ranking.
4. Senior Start: Coric was selected to play David Cup for his country against Great Britain in the World Group Playoff tie. He played his first match against Andy Murray and lost in straight sets.
5. Breakthrough Season: Coric earned his first wins in an ATP main draw event in Umag by reaching the quarterfinals. Later that year, Coric qualified for the US Open and thus competed in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. He defeated Lukas Rosol in the first round.
6. Basel Best: With a wildcard in the Swiss Indoors, Coric defeated Ernests Gulbis to reach the quarterfinals. He went on to defeat Rafael Nadal 6-2, 7-6(4) to reach his first ATP semifinal.
7. Idol Worship: Coric's favorite players are Goran Ivanesvic and Rafael Nadal.
8. Favorite Things: Coric's favorite shot is his backhand. His favorite sport aside from tennis is boxing.
9. History Maker: Because of his results in Basel, Coric is projected to break into the ATP top 100. He will be the first 17-year-old to do so since 2004.
