Simona Halep's cranky back injury has forced her out of Moscow and could sideline her from the season-ending WTA Finals.
The world No. 1 officially withdrew from the Kremlin Cup as she continues recovery from a herniated disc.

"I tried everything I could to be ready here as I really wanted to play, but unfortunately the back is still causing me pain and I don't want to take any unnecessary risks," Halep said. "While it's disappointing to withdraw, I know it's important to put my health first. I've had a wonderful few days here in Moscow and wish the tournament every success."
The Moscow withdrawal means it's unlikely Halep will play the WTA Finals in Singapore next week.
"If I can’t play [in Moscow] I’m very doubtful that I will be able to play in Singapore because it’s so soon," Halep told the media in a conference call. "I don’t know now, but for sure I will take a decision for my health first."
Lucky loser Valentini Grammatikopoulou from Greece replaces Halep in the Moscow draw. She will play Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round two.
