Serena Williams says striving for calm in the midst of a Grand Slam storm has helped her produce some of her best tennis after age 30.

The world No. 1, who has pulled the plug on her season, rocks the pages of the new Harper's Bazaar in this photo shoot by noted photographer Douglas Friedman for the magazine's "Women Who Dare" feature. See video of Serena's shoot above.

The 34-year-old Williams says while her intensity is a key to her success, she's aiming for a calmer approach on court.

"I've made it a point to be calmer," Williams told Harper's Bazaar. "You know me, I'm really intense and really crazy, but in my career I want to be more calm."

The 21-time Grand Slam champion, who grew up playing with older sister Venus on public park courts, believes tennis is her birthright.

"I feel stronger now," Williams told Harper's Bazaar. "Some people are born to do certain things, and I think I was born to do tennis. I definitely didn't miss my calling.

"I have so much more perspective; I'm more clear. It's like I can see the game better."

Serena describes herself as a "daredevil" and praises a pair of fellow champions for their sense of daring.

"Venus is daring," Serena tells Harper's Bazaar of her sister. "And Ronda Rousey, the UFC fighter. The way she speaks up for herself is bold and inspiring."
