McEnroe: Kyrgios Most Talented, Headed For Disaster

Nick Kyrgios is the most talented player John McEnroe has seen in a decade, but the former No. 1 cautions if Kyrgios doesn't get help he's headed for career disaster.

McEnroe coached Kyrgios during Laver Cup competition last summer and calls the explosive Aussie the most talented young player in the game in a new interview with Australia's 60 Minutes.

"[Nick is] the most talented player in the last 10 years," McEnroe told 60 Minutes. "The difference between Nick and I at the moment is I tried all the time. He doesn't for whatever reason. I'm not Sigmund Freud. I wish I was 'cause I like Nick."

The Hall of Famer says if Kyrgios doesn't put a proper coaching team in place, he runs the risk of career implosion.

"He's going to run himself out of the game at this point, which I don't want to see," McEnroe told 60 Minutes. "But that's what's going to happen. It's as clear as day."

Earlier this month, Kyrgios told the Canberra Times' Chris Dutton that he’s started to see two different psychologists and that he’s comfortable both accepting and talking about his issues now.

"I was obviously struggling with a couple of things on and off the court this year, so it hasn't been easy,” Kyrgios said. “But I'm starting to see some psychologists and trying to get on top of my mental health.”

McEnroe says Kyrgios is the most gifted player he's seen since the Big Four and believes he can contend for Grand Slam titles if he can find the desire and discipline.

"Nick to me is the most talented tennis player of the last 10 years I've seen, since Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, Federer," McEnroe told Tennis Now earlier this season. "He's an incredible talent."
