The two-time Wimbledon winner is the third Grand Slam champion in two days to depart the women's field, joining seven-time major winner Venus Williams and reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, who both fell in the opening round yesterday.
Kvitova expects to be sidelined for two to three weeks and hopes to return during grass-court season.
"Two to three weeks, so I gonna do some fitness and everything what I can do and to kind of prepare my body for the tennis on the grass then," Kvitova said. "Of course that I'm staying positive for the grass season."
The sixth-ranked Czech, who won Stuttgart last month, was one of five women with a shot to seize the No. 1 ranking at the end of the French Open fortnight.
Now, with both Kvitova and Kerber out there are three women with the opportunity to leave Paris holding the top spot: world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova and Madrid champion Kiki Bertens.
