Casper Ruud Explains Icy Post-Match Handshake with Holger Rune in Paris

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Thursday June 2 2022

The first all-Scandinavian men’s singles quarterfinal in Roland-Garros history, and the first at any Slam since 1995, ended in an icy handshake.

Many were left wondering why Casper Ruud and Holger Rune had no love for one another after Ruud dispatched the 19-year-old 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 to become Norway’s maiden Grand Slam finalist.

Ruud explained the situation after his match. Here’s what he said, according to Howard Fendrich of the AP.

“I told him, ‘What, do you need to check every mark?’ and he told me to be quiet. I asked him, ‘Maybe that’s not the greatest thing to tell your opponent to be quiet when I’m talking to you?’ And he said it once more. So that was all that happened. And I didn’t exchange any more words with him after this,” Ruud said. “So that’s what he wants to say and behave? That’s up to him.”

Ruud moves on to face hard-serving Marin Cilic in the semi-final on the lower half of the draw, while Rafael Nadal is set to face Alexander Zverev in the top-half semi-final on Friday
