Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

An elbow injury sidelined Nick Kyrgios in recent months.

Kyrgios' compulsion for creating crazy tweener moments remains undiminished.

Playing his first match since April 13th, Kyrgios broke out this crazy-cool tweener pass up 3-2 in the third set vs. Maximilian Marterer in Stuttgart.

The man who brings Harlem Globetrotters-style shotmaking to tennis adds creative elements here.

First, Kyrgios slithers a backhand drop shot to draw the lefty baseliner forward. Pausing to line up the shot, Kyrgios calmly flicks the tweener pass down the line and casually walks back to the baseline.

Kyrgios cranked 20 aces in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 triumph.

"Obviously, I'm happy to get the win," Kyrgios said. "It was a tough match. He plays very well. He's got a big serve and he plays aggressive so it was tough to get any rhythm today and I'm happy I got the win."

If he can stay healthy, Kyrgios is confident he can do damage at Wimbledon.

“I’d love to do well there, I don’t think there’s anything stopping me if I have the right preparation in the next couple of weeks,” Kyrgios told the media in Stuttgart. “Right now I’m taking it one day at a time with my rehab.

“At the end of the day, people pay to come and see us, we’re entertainers.”

The fourth-seeded Aussie will face Feliciano Lopez for a semifinal spot.

The Spanish veteran saved three of four break points in a 7-6 (6), 6-4 decision over Gilles Simon.

Lopez has won two of three meetings vs. Kyrgios, but the enigmatic Aussie won their lone grass clash at the 2016 Wimbledon.
