Second Serve

Nick Kyrgios was his usual wildly entertaining self on Day 2 as he worked his way past Radek Stepanek (and Mo Lahyani) to claim a 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(9), 6-1 victory.

More: Wimbledon's Day 1 By the Numbers

Kyrgios and Stepanek put on a great show for a capacity crowd on Court 2, and there were many jaw-dropping moments, none better than this magnificent tweener (see video above) struck early in the second set. Much to the delight of a small yet vocal contingent of green-and-gold clad rowdies in the first two rows of the intimate court on the south side of the grounds, Kyrgios reacted to being wrong-footed by a Stepanek volley with a characteristically brilliant display of shotmaking.

It wasn’t all pie in the sky for Kyrgios. He was made to work an extra set when Stepanek secured a late break in the third before saving two match points in the third-set tiebreaker to prolong the match.

After the third set Kyrgios was handed a warning for an audible obscenity by umpire Mohamed Lahyani, but it hasn’t yet become clear exactly what Kyrgios said. The pair had it out for a bit before play resumed:

But Kyrgios commanded the court from that point on, winning six of the final seven games to clinch his victory in two hours and 26 minutes.

Kyrgios will move on to face Dustin Brown in the second round. The German marched past Dusan Lajovic in five sets, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 8 minutes.

Other early winners on day 2:
