Roger Federer tells ATPWorldTour.com that he made the right decision by opting out of Roland Garros for the first time since 1998.

The Wait is Over: Djokovic Wins Roland Garros!

“I feel much better again. It's been a good last three weeks. No setbacks,” Federer told the ATP while the Roland Garros final was taking place. “My back's good again. I feel much stronger. I was pretty fragile three weeks ago.”

Federer will play his first match on Wednesday against either 18-year-old American Taylor Fritz or French qualifier Fabrice Martin, in second-round action at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
Is he thinking about beginning his comeback with a title?

"If I survive a couple of matches, when you are in the semifinals, you start thinking about the title. But to think now about the title here would be a little premature," he said, according to the AP. "Now it's important to come back from injuries. That's really the only thing that matters for me."

The 34-year-old, owner of 15 grass court titles and a career record of 142-20 on the surface, says the tough decision to skip the French and end his record run of 65 consecutive majors played was ultimately the right one.

“It was much better for me to look forward to the rest of the season, rest of my life, really,” he said. “I didn't want to have setback after setback and injure myself maybe further. In hindsight, that was definitely the right decision.”

The seven-time Wimbledon champion’s winning percentage of .877 on grass is tops among all Open Era male players. He is playing the Stuttgart event, which switched from clay to grass last year, for the first time. The Swiss is one win from tying Ivan Lendl for second place on the ATP’s all-time win list with 1,071.

Federer warmed up on Monday by playing some tennis with his friend Tommy Haas on Cloud 9.
