Serena Williams Has Asked Coach Patrick Mouratoglou Not to Speak about Her at Wimbledon


Wimbledon, England—The outspoken coach of Serena Williams has agreed not to speak to media while the seven-time champion chases her seventh Wimbledon and 24th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

According to Christopher Clarey of the New York Times, Mouratoglou has agreed not to speak publicly about her until the tournament is over. Here's a snippet:

Mouratoglou was surely enjoying the view behind his sunglasses, although he could not confirm that on Tuesday because he has agreed at Williams request not to speak publicly about her during this tournament.


“I made that commitment to not speak,” he said after Tuesday’s victory, according to Clarrey. “For her to win Wimbledon is much more important than my freedom of expression.”

Williams defeated Italy’s Camila Giorgi in three sets on Tuesday to reach the semifinals. The American improved to 91-10 lifetime at the Championships and will face No.13-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany in the semifinals on Thursday.


Williams dropped a set for the first time all tournament on Tuesday but rebounded behind the strength of strong serving to reach the Wimbledon semifinals for the 11th time.

She dropped just 14 points in 14 service games, and won 75 percent of her second-serve points.

“Sometimes I feel, ‘Man, I'm in trouble,’” Williams said after the match. “Sometimes I feel, I can fight. For whatever reason, today I was so calm. Even when I was down the first set, I thought, Well, she's playing great. I'm doing a lot of the right things.”
