Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Many have been critical about the actions of Nick Kyrgios during Wimbledon this year (see him get grilled by journalists above), particularly on Monday, when the Aussie tanked a return game after being frustrated about receiving a code violation in the previous game. Kyrgios and Gasquet both received fines for their behavior during the match.

Djokovic Suggests Shift for Upcoming Cilic Match

Not Roger Federer. The father of four told journalists to look at the big picture when he was asked about the incident. Here’s what Federer had to say during his press conference:

“I think we shouldn't dig too deep into those kind of things,” he said. “If you told me he did an entire set, plus more, plus this, I'd say, Okay, it's a bit much probably. But I just watched the end of the third, the end of the fourth. He was fighting then. He was really wanting to win. He should have been in the fifth at the end.

“In my opinion, it was a great match and it was close. The fans got their money's worth, in my opinion. It was a close match last year. He saved nine match points against Richard. Today two.

He added: "Maybe yourself, you can be frustrated and just not feel like it for a couple of points. Especially a younger guy, it's going to happen more often than one of the top guys that have been around, that just like say, ‘Okay, point mentality, we'll do it again and again and again and again.’ For a younger guys, it's a little bit boring at times, which I understand.”

Kyrgios was grilled by press after the match, and he became a bit testy about their persistence, eventually telling a journalist “Do you want to try and return Richard Gasquet’s serve? I’ll give you the racquet and we’ll see how many times you can return his serve.”

He went on to deny the accusations that he tanked, saying “Of course I tried. He hits a serve past me as an ace? That’s too good.”
