Halep Out of Fed Cup

The ankle injury Simona Halep sustained in Australia has forced her out of this weekend's Fed Cup competition.

The world No. 2 announced in a Facebook post today she will sit out Romania's Fed Cup tie vs. Canada as she continues to recover from the ankle injury she suffered en route to the Australian Open final.

The 26-year-old Halep plans to travel with her Romanian teammates to Cluj-Napoca where Romania will host Canada.

"After spending the last week resting and rehabbing my injury from the Australian Open, unfortunately it has not recovered quickly enough," Halep said on Facebook.

"I'm sad as playing for Romania is very important to me but I look forward to seeing everyone in Cluj as I will travel to support my teammates in this very important tie," Halep said in her post. "Good luck Romania!"

In Halep's absence, Irina-Camelia Begu and Sorana Cirstea are the likely Romanian singles starters. Halep and Begu partnered to win the Shenzhen Open doubles title last month after Halep had collected the Shenzhen singles title.

Former Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard is not playing for Canada. Bouchard is scheduled to join US Open Sloane Stephens in an exhibition at the New York Open.
