Wozniacki's Weather Weapon

A biting unpredictable wind has created tricky conditions in Charleston this week.

If Caroline Wozniacki seemed to be the calm in the midst of a wind storm, there's good reason.

The woman nicknamed Sunshine says growing up in breezy Denmark gives her a bit of a comfort level on court.

"I think when it's windy like this, it definitely evens out the playing field a little bit, so the better player doesn't have as much of an advantage," said Wozniacki after winning two matches on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals.

"But at the same time I grew up in Denmark and we had windy conditions there as well, so you kind of learn to deal with it a little bit, and I just played with bigger margins and try to figure out which way the wind is blowing and use it for my advantage."

Wind power technology is a billion dollar business in Denmark, which has been a pioneer developing wind technology. More than 40 per cent of Denmark’s energy supply comes from wind power "and the plan is to reach 50 per cent by 2020, as set out in the 2012 Energy Act," according to the official website of Denmark.

There's been a winning wind at Wozniacki's back this season.

The 2011 Charleston champion carries a 25-7 record into tonight's quarterfinal with 66th-ranked Jelena Ostapenko.

The Miami finalist said the prospect of a vacation after Charleston is also a source of motivation.

"I mean it's always nice to think I've had a great month, great few weeks, and hopefully I can finish it off well here and then take a little bit of time off and enjoy it," Wozniacki said. "So I want to do well here so I can relax feeling good about it."
