Gisela Dulko advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Wednesday morning, but not the way she wanted to.
Victoria Azarenka has had to retire from a Grand Slam due to some form of heat exhaustion. Azarenka collapsed while trailing Dulko 5-1 in their first set.
It has been an unusually-hot week in New York City, with the temperature at 90 degrees with 42 percent humidity during the match.
Azarenka went down to the court without appearing to hurt a leg, foot or ankle. Dulko instinctively went to check on her, but was asked to step back by medical personnel who were on the scene early and yelled to the sideline for water.
After a few moments on the ground, Azarenka left the court in a wheelchair with a trainer checking her pulse.
Dulko moves on to the third round to play either Sania Mirza or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
