On Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden Medvedev battled past Ilya Ivashka 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to set a round of 16 clash with Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

Medvedev saw his streak of 18 consecutive sets go by the wayside, but was able to right the ship in the decider as he pulled away from the Belarusian to improve to 21-2 on the season.

“Very tough, not easy to play here,” Medvedev said of the slow-playing conditions on Stadium 1 Sunday evening. “For everyone, for everyone. I feel like there are, let's say, ten players that have the quality, I will not say which one, but to play good here because they have something in their game that can help them. Other than that everyone is struggling.”

Medvedev hit 27 winners against 19 unforced errors and saved five of seven break points.

Preferring faster conditions, Medvedev expressed frustration during and after the match, but says he’ll soldier on and continue to fight through. He is into the round of 16 for the second time in his career at Indian Wells and will bid to reach the quarterfinals for the first time on Tuesday against Zverev.

Zverev beat Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.

The pair have split their 12 previous meetings.

“I cannot say I played much better in the third,” Medvedev said. “Not easy, but not easy for everyone. Gonna try to continue fighting through this.”

In other action on Friday, Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin took out third-seeded Casper Ruud, 6-4, 7-6(2), while 14th-seeded Frances Tiafoe hammered past Australia’s Jason Kubler, 6-3, 6-2.

Sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev pummeled Ugo Humbert, 7-5, 6-3, while 23rd-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina topped 13th-seeded Karen Khachanov 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

10th-seeded and 2021 champion Cameron Norrie rallied from a set and 3-0 down to defeat Taro Daniel, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2, and Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo, the current 187, topped Jordan Thompson, 6-3, 7-6(6), to reach his first Masters 1000 round of 16

Tabilo was 1-2 lifetime in Masters 1000 main draw matches before this week.

Between Garin and Tabilo, Chileans have gone 10-0 at the BNP Paribas Open, including their qualifying matches. Tabilo will face Tiafoe next; Garin will face Davidovich Fokina.

Rublev will face Norrie.
