Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev sailed into the third round with a straight set win over Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori.

The man who took out Andy Murray in first-round action at Madrid was no match for Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev eased past Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori, 6-4, 6-3, on Saturday at Madrid to reach the third round.

Medvedev dropped just 14 points on serve and won 16 of 22 points at net across the 82-minute first-time meeting. The No.2 seed converted two of four break points, breaking in his final return game of each set, for 5-4 in the first set and for 5-3 in the second set.

Medvedev saved all three break points he faced against the World No.164 to set a third-round clash with fellow Russian Alexander Shevchenko. Shevchenko rocked past No.31 seed Jiri Lehecka 6-1 6-1 on Saturday.

That victory followed a 6-4 6-4 takedown of American JJ Wolf for Svechenko. The 22-year-old also has two challenger titles to his name in 2023, including one last week at Madrid, where he defeated Pedro Cachin for the title.

“There were some tight moments in the match, but when we had rallies from the baseline, I felt like many times I was in control,” Medvedev said after improving to 21-24 lifetime on clay (3-1 in 2023). “I’m really happy about my level.”

Medvedev, fresh off a quarterfinal at Monte-Carlo, where he was ousted by Holger Rune, is into the third round at Madrid for the second time – he has never been beyond.

The Russian’s record now stands at 32-4 on the season, and he leads the ATP with four titles in 2023.
