Carlos Alcaraz has a way of saving his best and brightest for last, and the 19-year-old did that again on Sunday as he capped of the successful defense of his Barcelona Open title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Spaniard claims his ninth ATP title with a pitch perfect performance against the Greek, as he improves to 4-0 against Tsitsipas and 23-2 on the season.
The world No.2 needed just 79 minutes to move past one of the world’s best clay-courters as he dropped only ten points on serve and converted three of six break points.
"It is incredible," Alcaraz said after the match. "To feel this energy and lift the trophy in Barcelona in front of my family and friends, and most members of my team are here as well. Playing this level and to lift the trophy in front of them is a good feeling for me."
Only five players – Rafael Nadal (17), Bjorn Borg (17), Mats Wilander (14), Boris Becker (12) and Andre Agassi (10) – have won more titles than Alcaraz as a teenager
He is the second player to successfully defend an ATP title this season, along with Holger Rune, who won the title in Munich on Sunday.
