The Springfield Lasers are World Team Tennis champions—again.
The Lasers completed their successful title defense on Saturday night in Las Vegas with a tense 20-19 victory over the New York Empire.
Evan Song, a late addition to the Lasers roster who played the regular season with the Vegas Rollers, came through in the men’s doubles, serving out the championship and clinching the King Trophy.
Song had 40-0 but he and Robert Lindstedt lost three straight points against Ulises Blanch and Neal Skupski before winning a deciding point.
“Being born and raised in Vegas, to play in front of my home crowd in an event like this, it was a dream for me,” Song said.
Song started in men’s singles, falling to Blanch, 5-3. The Empires led 10-7 after Kirsten Flipkens and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez defeated Olga Govortsova and Abigail Spears 5-4.
But Robert Lindstedt and Spears got the Lasers level with a 5-2 win over Skupski and Martinez Sanchez.
That helped set the table for Song’s heroics.
