Alcaraz, Davidovich Fokina Surge into Barcelona Quarterfinals

Playing on native soil, Carlos Alcaraz continues home-schooling all comers.

The streaking Spaniard dispatched Laslo Djere 6-2, 6-4 on Barcelona’s red clay to charge into his sixth quarterfinal in seven tournaments this season.

Two-time Barcelona champion Alcaraz is 27-1 on Spanish clay courts since the start of 2022 with his lone loss in that span coming to Andrey Rublev in the 2024 Madrid quarterfinals.

Winning six matches in seven days between his Monte-Carlo title run and his Barcelona opening-round win over American Ethan Quinn, Alcaraz enjoyed a rare day off yesterday.

An eager Alcaraz rolled through five games in a row in the first set then came back from 2-4 down with a four-game surge sealing this win with an ace.

“I think I played great tennis—much better than the first round—even though I had to come back from 4-2 [down] in the second set,” Alcaraz said. “He played much better in the second set, but I’m just very happy to find a great level again and just keep going.”

Finding his comfort zone on clay in the aftermath of a surprising Miami Open loss to David Goffin, Alcaraz is 19-1 on dirt since May.

The top-seeded Alcaraz won the toss, elected to receive and after Djere held to start Alcaraz tore through five consecutive games for a 5-1 lead.

Unleashing some jolting drives, Alcaraz rocketed a laser forehand strike down the line breaking for 4-1.

The Wimbledon winner saved a pair of break points in the sixth game, slamming an ace for 5-1.

Djere wasn’t doing much damage on serve and inexplicably did not even make a play on an Alcaraz retrieval.

Still, the Serbian qualifier hung tough to hold, snapping a five-game slide for 2-5.

Alcaraz, whose first serve was hit and miss at times during his Monte-Carlo title run, served 71 percent and won 13 of 17 first-serve points in the opening set today.

When Djere netted a backhand, Alcaraz snatched a one-set lead.

The Serbian used the surprise serve-and-volley to hold for 3-2 then drew successive forehand errors from the Spaniard to break for 4-2.

Alcaraz amped up the pace of his drives overwhelming Djere during the four-game sprint to the finish line. Alcaraz broke back at love and won eight of the last 10 points played on his serve to wrap up a 70-minute win.

The reigning Roland Garros champion carries a 22-4 record on the season into his quarterfinal clash against either No. 5-seeded Alex de Minaur or lucky loser Jacob Fearnley.

Last year, Alcaraz was forced out of Barcelona with an arm injury, which created an ignominious achievement for the home side. No Spaniard reached the Barcelona quarterfinals last year—the first time that happened since 1989.

Today, it was a Spanish celebration day in Barcelona as Hall of Famer and former world No. 1 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario helped conduct the coin toss before the Alcaraz match and former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero was back in the reigning Roland Garros champion’s coaching box today after missing his first-round match.

Before Alcaraz changed to his seventh straight win, good friend and compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina thrilled home fans.

World No. 30 Davidovich Fokina fought off fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-5 to advance to his fourth quarterfinal of the year.

It’s a major moment for Davidovich Fokina, who was 0-5 lifetime against Rublev before posting today’s upset. Davidovich Fokina improved to 20-9 on the season joining Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur as the third man to post 20 victories in 2025.

Next up for Davidovich Fokina is a quarterfinal match against former Paris Masters champion Karen Khachanov.

Earlier, Khachanov converted four of 15 break points stopping Spaniard Jaume Munar 7-5, 6-4, in two hours, eight minutes.

The 25-year-old Davidovich Fokina has won two of three meetings vs. the Russian, but Khachanov swept their lone clay-court encounter, 6-2, 6-2, at the 2023 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
