Second Serve

Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon are no stranger to long rallies. They once played a 71-stroke rally at the 2013 Australian Open (Simon won the match, 8-6 in the fifth). On Thursday in Tokyo the two Frenchman were back at it again. Simon won the marathon rally again, but this time Monfils took the match. It was only Monfils second win in eight career matches against his compatriot.

Monfils, who now owns a 35-8 hardcourt record on the season, has won 21 of his last 24 matches and will face either Ivo Karlovic or Janko Tipsarevic in the quarterfinals at Tokyo.

In other second-round action on Thursday, Gilles Muller defeated Marcos Baghdatis, 6-3, 6-4, to set up a quarterfinal with No. 6-seeded Nick Kyrgios. The Aussie came through when Radek Stepanek had to pull out due to injury.
