Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Madison Keys needed just one set from Angelique Kerber on Thursday at the WTA Finals in Singapore. Just one set, and she would have advanced to the semifinals on her debut, but Kerber was in no mood to let the kid have her way. Behind relentless counterpunching and confident second-serve returns, the German improved to 6-1 against Keys, locked up first place in the Red Group and paved the way for Dominika Cibulkova to reach the semis.

Cibulkova, who entered the day with the slimmest of hopes, helped her cause with a straight-sets win over Simona Halep.

Keys, who had suffered a heartbreaking loss to Kerber at the Olympics this summer, had planned to go for her shots and let the chips fall where they may against Kerber. We certainly can’t fault her on the above point. She does everything in her power to take the point from Kerber, including striking a ridiculous running forehand down the line.

Kerber’s reply, however, was all too familiar. Yet another brilliant counterpunch on the run. The World No.1 took the point and the match, and is looking like the heavy favorite to take the tournament.
