Murray Withdraws, Djokovic Moves on in Madrid

The reunion of the current and former world No. 1 players will have to wait.

Andy Murray withdrew from today's scheduled Mutua Madrid Open round of 16 clash vs. Novak Djokovic due to illness.

Two-time Olympic gold-medal champion Murray and Djokovic met for the first time as professionals at the 2006 Madrid back when the tournament was staged in the fall. Today's encounter was scheduled to be their first meeting in five years before Murray pulled out about an hour before the scheduled start of play.

"It's unfortunate because we were looking forward to playing," Djokovic said. "Hopefully, we will play again in the future."

World No. 1 Djokovic took a walkover into the quarterfinals where he awaits either 12th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz or compatriot qualifier Dusan Lajovic for a spot in the final four.

The Djokovic-Murray match was replaced by Andrey Rublev vs. Daniel Evans as the opening match on Manolo Santana Stadium.
