ITF Endorses Shorter Davis Cup Matches

Going the distance in Davis Cup may soon be a shorter trip.

The International Tennis Federation Board of Directors unanimously endorsed "comprehensive reforms" for both Davis Cup and Fed Cup at its meeting in Indian Wells, the ITF announced today.

The Board of Directors supports shortening Davis Cup matches from the current best-of-five sets to best-of-three sets among other reforms.

If the proposal is approved at the ITF general meeting in August, Davis Cup matches will be best-of-three sets and Davis Cup weekends could be condensed from three days to two days.

Fed Cup currently contests its World Group ties over two days.

The board is also considering expanding the Fed Cup World Group to 16 teams and granting first-round byes to reigning Davis Cup and Fed Cup champions.
