Kyrgios: Selfish to Play US Open

Nick Kyrgios has a message for the USTA and Americans pushing to play the US Open: it's selfish.

The 25-year-old Aussie took to Twitter to voice his view on the USTA's plan to play the US Open as scheduled starting on August 31st, pending government approval.

The USTA plans to create a safety bubble around the tournament in an effort to protect players and staff from the coronavirus.

Several prominent European and Australian players have objected pointing out there is still no cure for coronavirus and those traveling from foreign countries run the risk of a quarantine period in the United States as some nations have implemented international travel restrictions.

"People that live in the U.S. of course are pushing the Open to go ahead," Kyrgios wrote. "‘Selfish. I’ll get my hazmat suit ready for when I travel from Australia and then have to quarantine for 2 weeks on my return."

Last week, Kyrgios called out the Big 3 of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to take a public stand on playing the US Open while the coronavirus pandemic persists.

Federer, who underwent a second arthroscopic surgery to his right knee, announced he's out for the rest of the 2020 season. Both Djokovic and reigning US Open champion Nadal have expressed reservations about traveling to New York City and playing under the USTA's proposed safety protocol while the coronavirus continues.
