Fognini said he had been having a problem with the left ankle for three and a half years, but had learned to cope with it. More recently the right ankle started to give him problems. He had hoped to heal during the long layoff caused by the Coronavirus pandemic but when he realized things were not improving he elected to have the surgery.

Currently ranked 11 in the world, Fognini became the first Italian to crack the ATP’s Top 10 since 1979. He also became the oldest ATP player to crack the Top 10 for the first time at 32 years of age.
