And somehow, it is capped off by one of the most perfect finishing volleys of the century, by Schwartzman. It’s a wonder that he could even stand at that juncture of the point, let alone finish it with gusto.

“I always try to play like this on the court way,” said Schwartzman after the match. “Trying to fight for every ball, every game, every set.”

Schwartzman went on to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in two hours and three minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the German Open.

Germany’s Florian Mayer also advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday in Hamburg.
