Bethanie Mattek-Sands took time to communicate with fans and thank them for their support on Facebook on Saturday, saying that she experienced one of the most painful injuries of her career. She said she was especially grateful for the support from Sorana Cirstea, who came to her aid on the court.

“I think in that moment Sorana was there as my friend,” Mattek-Sands said. “It doesn’t matter that it was in the middle of the match. It means a lot to me—she’s an amazing person.”

She added: “I was out there for a while. It felt like an eternity to me. I juust remember everybody getting ready to straighten my leg and I kept telling [my husband], I said if anybody straightens my leg I’m going to kill you.”

Mattek-Sands said she dislocated her patella and ruptured her patella tendon. She said she will need surgery and will be out for a while.

Surgery from a torn patella tendon usually takes a rehab period of 4-6 months.

“All the support has really been getting me through this,” she said. “So thank you, I’ll get back out there.”
