Despite the recent Fourth of July holiday, the two top American men found themselves exiting the second round of Wimbledon on the same day.
Wimbledon: Hantuchova Announces Retirement From Pro Tennis
Now U.S No. 1 Jack Sock and No. 2 John Isner are out of the men’s singles draw.
No. 23 seed John Isner struck 45 aces in his match against Israel’s Dudi Sela. But that was not enough for the 6’ 10” (2.08-meter) Isner despite his height advantage over his 5’ 9” (1.75-meter) size opponent.
Both men split tiebreaks before Isner took a two sets to one lead. Yet Sela managed to win a fourth set tiebreak and kept his momentum into the deciding set.
Sela fought off late break point chances by Isner who had six in total. The 90th- ranked Sela finally closed out the 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory.
"It's all between the ears, I think," Isner said. "I had opportunities, of course. When I don't go for it, bad things happen. That was the case throughout the whole match, me not going for it. That's why I lost."
Sela next faces No. 13 seed Grigor Dimitrov.
For No. 17 seed Jack Sock, it seemed he might have an easy time against unheralded Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner.
Yet Ofner, currently ranked No. 217, proved more than a match for the higher ranked Sock.
Ofner won the first two sets before Sock managed to level things into a decisive fifth set. Ofner, who is currently coached by the father of Dominic Thiem managed to finally close out Sock 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 6-2 for his biggest career win yet to reach the third round
