Simona Halep can become the WTA’s 23rd No.1-ranked player with a victory over Johanna Konta on Day 8 at Wimbledon. The Romanian needs to reach at least the semifinals to claim the top spot in the rankings. If she falls to Konta, Karolina Pliskova will become No.1 on Monday when the WTA Tour releases its new rankings.
In other rankings news, Venus Williams (No.11), Jelena Ostapenko (No.13) and Garbiñe Muguruza (No.14) each have a chance to book a spot in the Top 10 after Wimbledon with a win in the quarterfinals. They each can move as high as No.4 if they go on to win the title.
That means that Serena Williams will drop out of the Top 10 for the first time since 2012. The 23-time major champion has held on to a spot in the Top 10 for the last 276 weeks.
Simona Halep will now hold the longest active streak for weeks in the Top 10. According to the WTA, the Romanian entered the Top 10 on Jan 27, 2014 and her streak will move to 182-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 after Wimbledon.
