Stefanos Tsitsipas has big plans for 2020 and truly believes that can win a major title this season. Speaking with Greek journalist Vicky Georgatou, the World No. 6 says he feels that everything is in place to take the next big step in 2020.
“I could win a Grand Slam title this year,” he said. “I feel that my body is ready mentally. I’m there to give 100 percent of the effort and energy to reach such a feat.”
Tsitsipas reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open after he knocked off Roger Federer in the round of 16, but after he suffered a heartbreaking loss to Stan Wawrinka in the fourth round at Roland Garros last year his season at the majors took a turn for the worse. He lost in the opening round at Wimbledon to Thomas Fabbiano and then in the opening round at the US Open to Andrey Rublev.
Those were tough losses to stomach, but Tsitsipas grand finale in 2019 was becoming the youngest player to win the ATP Finals title in 18 years. Not a bad way to finish a season.
Tsitsipas hopes to parlay the confidence built in London into a run at Melbourne, where he’ll supported boisterously by Melbourne’s enormous, tennis-loving Greek contingent.
“Even in this tournament, it’s all about momentum, how strongly I’ll get into the tournament, how much energy I’ll have and how much I’ll want it,” he told Georgatou. “And how much energy I’ll get from the Greeks in Australia and my own team.”
