Alex de Minaur will miss the 2020 Australian Open with an adominal injury. The 20-year-old Aussie was forced to pull out of this week’s Adelaide International, and apparently has already recognized that playing in a major in less than four days is too much of an ask.

"Everyone was telling me not to play," De Minaur said. "As much as it killed me, it was the right decision to pull out. This is the tournament you look forward to--play in front of my home fans. I was very excited coming into this Australian Open. I feel like my level was at a very high level and I was really hoping to make a deep run, but I'm still young and there will be plenty more chances.”

De Minaur announced his withdrawal a few hours before the main draw on Thursday night. The Aussie began his season going 2-2 in singles at the ATP Cup, where he defeated Alexander Zverev and Denis Shapovalov before losing in three sets to Dan Evans and Rafael Nadal. He was also a part of the doubles thriller in which he and Nick Kyrgios saved four match points en route to a dramatic victory over Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury to clinch the quarterfinals for Australia.

"Hopefully I'll be back competing in four weeks time,” De Minaur said.
