Serena Smashed Racquet Sells for $20,910

Racquet abuse has seldom been so lucrative.

The Wilson Blade racquet Serena Williams famously smashed in frustration during her 2018 US Open final loss to Naomi Osaka sold at auction for $20,910, Goldin Auctions announced.

Williams tomahawked the racquet to the court leaving a mangled mess after dropping serve during the second set of her 6-2, 6-4 loss to Osaka.

Afterward, Williams gave the busted racquet to ball boy Justin Arrington-Holmes, who told the New York Times he sold it to a Manhattan sports memorabilia dealer for $500 earlier this year.

“Looking back I wish I’d had someone help me with the process,” Holmes told the New York Times. “I was not familiar with how any of this works. I just wanted to get rid of it.”

Serena's Wilson Blade was one of several pieces of sports history sold at the auction.

Sprinter Jesse Owens' 1936 Olympic gold medal sold for $615,000. An autographed LeBron James rookie NBA card garnered $198,030 and a Rawlings baseball bat slugger Reggie Jackson used to hit career home runs No. 501 and 502 went for $40,590.
