Murray Withdraws From Australian Open

Andy Murray's 2020 Australian Open is over before it began.

The five-time Australian Open finalist has withdrawn from the Melbourne major after suffering a pelvic injury.

The injury has also knocked Murray out of the ATP Cup, starting on January 3rd in Australia.

"Unfortunately, I've had a setback and as a precaution need to work through that before competing," Murray told the BBC. "I've worked so hard to get myself into a situation where I can play at the top level and I'm gutted I'm not going to be able to play."

The Australian Open begins on January 20th.

The former world No. 1, whose wife Kim gave birth to the couple's third child last month, made an inspired comeback from hip resurfacing surgery he underwent on January 28th following a tearful Australian Open first-round exit.

It was his second hip surgery in a year.

Murray earned ATP Comeback Player of the Year honors for his return.

"After the Australian Open earlier this year, when I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to play again," Murray said. "I was excited about coming back to Australia and giving my best, and that makes this even more disappointing for me."
