"Wow, I'm so thankful for this award," Andreescu said. "I was not expecting it and to be the first tennis player to win is even more surreal.
"None of my success this year would be possible without the support from all of Canada.
The 19-year-old Andreescu was a unanimous selection for the award named after former Toronto Star sports editor Lou Marsh. She beat out sprinter Andre De Grasse, NHL goalie Jordan Binnington, golfer Brooke Henderson and pitcher Mike Soroka to make history as the first tennis player to earn the honor.
Andreescu posted a 48-7 record, defeated former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber to claim her first WTA title at Indian Wells, stopped Serena Williams to win her hometown tournament title in Toronto then defeated former No. 1 Williams again in the US Open final becoming the first Canadian Grand Slam singles champion and denying Williams' quest to win her 24th Grand Slam title and match Margaret Court's all-time record.
"Canadian sports crushed it this year so there are definitely many other athletes who deserve a piece of this award as well—we all motivate each other to be better," Andreescu said. "I can't wait for what 2020 will bring and am always proud to represent Canada at the highest level."
