The loaded draw at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal has many salivating over a few early-round matchups, most notably a possible second-round clash between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber, which would take place if Williams can defeat the tricky Alizé Cornet in her first match at Montreal
Cornet actually owns three wins over Williams, and trails the head-to-head by a slim margin of 4-3. The Frenchwoman defeated Williams three times in a row (Dubai, Wimbledon, Wuhan) in 2014.
Williams leads Kerber 6-3 lifetime, but Kerber took their last meeting 6-3 6-3 in the Wimbledon final. The pair's last three meetings have all been contested in Grand Slam finals.

Another notable first-rounder will be contested between Johanna Konta and Jelena Ostapenko. The pair have split two meetings with Konta defeating Ostapenko in three sets last year at Eastbourne and Ostapenko returning the favor in three sets this year at Rome.
If the seeds hold, the quarterfinals shape up as follows in Montreal:
[1] Halep vs [6] Garcia
[4] Kerber vs [8] Kvitova
[7] Muguruza vs [3] Stephens
[5] Svitolina vs [2] Wozniacki
