Speaking on Wednesday to a Sportsnet panel in Montreal, Wayne Gretzky dished some high praise to Roger Federer. The NHL’s all-time points leader ranks the Swiss maestro among the best ever—in any sport.

“It’s hard to compare everyone,” Gretzky said. “But I would not only say that he’s the greatest tennis player but I would rank him maybe top three greatest athletes of all time. He deserves to be up there with guys like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Pelé He’s a special man. He’s got charisma, he’s got style, he’s got class. He’s a winner. He loves the sport, he’s got a passion for the game.”

Gretzky says that in time we’ll come to remember Federer as one of the great miracles of tennis.

“Years for now the tennis world and the sports world is going to look back and go ‘Wow was that guy ever a great athlete,’” he said

But Gretzky left room for another tennis player to come and shock us all. He says that sport is always improving and the capacity for the modern athlete to impress is great.
