Amelie Mauresmo says that tennis in 2020 needs to be shut down.
The two-time Slam champion and Hall of Famer posted on Twitter that she believes the sport needs to stop until a Coronavirus vaccine is on the market.
“I think we're going to have to draw a line under the 2020 tennis season,” the first Frenchwoman to ever rank No.1 in the Open Era said in French on Twitter. “International circuit = players of all nationalities plus management, spectators and people from the 4 corners of the world who bring these events to life. No vaccine = no tennis.”
It’s a sentiment that likely won’t be shared (at least for now while there is still hope) by many players and shareholders in the sport due to the fact that they are losing immense amounts of capital due to cancellations. On Wednesday Wimbledon was called off for the first time since World War II and the ATP and WTA Tours released a joint statement to declare that the tour is now postponed until at least July 13.
The US Open posted statement to say that they are planning on holding the tournament in the late August to early September time slot but admitted that all contingency plans are on the table.
