(May 5, 2011) No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki followed the footsteps of No. 2 Vera Zvonareva in getting upset in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday. Once again Julia Goerges found the key to breaking Wozniacki's consistency on court by staying in the game with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win.

Goerges and Wozniacki now share a tied head-to-head series at 2-2 after Goerges won their last two meetings on clay in Stuttgart and Madrid. Goerges hit four aces.

Fifth seed and French Open finalist Samantha Stosur was ousted by World No. 21 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(4), 6-3 for the first time in their three meetings.Pavlyuchenkova won her only break chance point and Stosur had five chances to break without success. Pavlyuchenkova hit five aces and won 70% of total service points. She currently holds 21 wins in 2011 to only 7 losses. Pavlyuchenkova will play Goerges, who has a 21-9 win/loss record.

As the only American singles player left in the draw, World No. 41 Bethanie Mattek-Sands took a major win over French Open champion and World No. 4 Francesca Schiavone 7-6(5), 6-3. She served five aces and saved 100% of break points for her first top 5 win. She will meet with Na Li next.

Fourth seed Victoria Azarenka and sixth seed Na Li were victorious in their matches. Azarenka took out Arantxa Parra Santonja in two sets 6-0, 6-3. Azarenka recently won her first clay court title in Marbella where she actually played Parra Santonja in the third round.

Australian Open finalist Na does not have to worry about meeting with Clijsters and made it into the Madrid quarterfinals after beating Roberta Vinci of Italy 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. 

For the last match of the night, World No. 32 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic defeated World No. 31 Jarmila Gajdosova 6-3, 6-3 with consistent service point winners. She won 77% of the total service points. Safarova has a 3-2 edge over Gajdosova in their head-to-head series. She will play Azarenka next.
