Vera Zvonareva's quest for a third straight title at the Pattaya Open came crashing to halt Saturday as the Russian was beaten 7-6(3), 6-4 by fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova in the semifinals.
Just a week after fumbling away a Fed Cup singles matches, Hantuchova fought from down 5-6 with Zvonareva serving in the first set to take the big win, improving to 2-4 all-time against the No. 3 player in the world.
"I just fought like crazy for every point," Hantuchova, ranked 32nd, said. "I think I played one of my best matches in the last few years."
The loss ended Zvonareva's 13-match win streak in Thailand. Despite her consistent Top 10 ranking, Zvonareva has not won a title in 19 straight tournaments, dating back to this location a year ago.
Hantuchova will take on eighth-seeded Sara Errani, who defeated fellow Italian and doubles partner Roberta Vinci, 6-1, 6-4, in Sunday's tournament final.
