Marin Cilic

Marin Cilic stunned second-seeded Daniil Medvedev to reach the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros.

1:45 was all it took for Marin Cilic to send No.2-seeded Daniil Medvedev in a match that was one-way traffic from start to finish.

The 33-year-old Croatian hammered past Medvedev 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 to book his third Roland-Garros quarterfinal – he will face Russia’s Andrey Rublev.

"It was an absolutely fantastic match from the first point to the last," he said on court after his win. "I enjoyed the atmosphere, enjoyed the night session here. I played incredible tennis — one of the best matches of my career from start to finish."

Cilic ripped five aces and won 35 of 39 first-serve points against Medvedev in a match in which he never faced a break point. The No.20 seed cracked 33 winners against just 15 for Medvedev and converted five of his seven break opportunities to earn his first lifetime win against the 2021 US Open champion.

Cilic’s victory leaves another hole in a bottom half of a draw that was decimated on Monday. No.4-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to unseeded Holger Rune and No.11-seeded Jannik Sinner was toppled by No.7 Andrey Rublev, who is the highest seed remaining in the lower half.

With Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev all into the quarterfinals in the top half, it paints a lopsided picture of the men’s draw.

No. 8-seeded Casper Ruud, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz on Monday, will face Rune next.

Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, has reached the finals of the other three Grand Slams, at the US Open in 2014 (champion), Wimbledon in 2017, and the Australian Open in 2018.
