Casper Ruud on clay – a force to be reckoned with. The Norwegian returned to his best surface for the first time since last July and continued his dominance on the surface, defeating Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, 7-6(2), 6-3 on Wednesday.

The World No.8 improves to 75-30 lifetime on clay, and 46-11 since the start of 2020.

He stretches his current winning streak on the surface to 12.

“It was a good start. First time playing on clay in six months, so everything is a bit new again,” Ruud said after his win. “Of course I prefer to play on clay, but it takes some time to get used to the court and playing points.”

Ruud will take on Federico Coria in the quarterfinals on Friday in Argentina.

Coria defeated Dusan Lajovic, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

38-year-old Fernando Verdasco notched a big win on Wednesday, defeating Thiago Monteiro, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, to set a quarterfinal clash with Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Verdasco has only won three matches on tour since the start of 2021. He has had knee and elbow surgeries over the last two years.

Sonego, the No.3 seed, defeated Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, 6-3, 6-3.
