With five days left in the World TeamTennis regular season the Chicago Smash have pulled into a first place tie with the Philadelphia Freedoms after they defeated the New York Empire 21-16 on Saturday at the Greenbrier Club in West Virginia.

Brandon Nakashima and Sloane Stephens scored singles victory for the Smash (8-2), and Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Genie Bouchard finished off the victory with a win over Kveta Peschke (and Kim Clijsters, who was subbed in late) and Hailey Baptiste.

The Freedoms fell earlier in the day, 23-13 to the Orlando Storm, thanks to a pair of wins by Tennys Sandgren and an upset victory by Jessica Pegula over Sofia Kenin.

The Storm have won three in a row and are holding down third place at 6-4 after Saturday’s play.

In other action on Saturday the Washington Kastles knocked off the San Diego Aviators 23-16, while the Orange County Breakers toppled the Springfield Lasers 24-21.
