Petra Martic advanced on Day 2 in Palermo but the No.2 seed wasn’t so lucky.

The top-seeded World No.15 rolled past Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-0 6-3 to reach the second round.

“I played well before the break, so I was happy with the rhythm, but obviously five months off disrupts everything,” said Martic, who will face Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. “Once the match started, I kind of let go and just played.”

It wasn’t easy for second-seeded Marketa Vondrousova to let go. She found herself embroiled in a two and a half hour struggle with 19-year-old Kaja Juvan and eventually was toppled by the teenager, ranked 121.

Juvan earned her first Top 20 win against the Czech, ralling to win 1-6 7-5 6-4.

There were mixed results from seeds on Day 2. Fourth-seeded Anett Kontaveit moved past Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig 6-3 6-3 but No.5-seeded Elise Mertens dropped out against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4 6-1.

Fiona Ferro (d. Podoroska) and Oceane Dodin of France (d. Zidansek) joined Samsonova (d. Flipkens) and Camila Giorgi (d. Rebecca Peterson) in the second round.

Here is what the singles draw looks like in Palermo ahead of Wednesday’s play:
