The scorching-hot Canadian pulled out of her round of 16 encounter with Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit with a shoulder injury while trailing 6-1, 2-0, ending her 10-match winning streak and sending Kontaveit through to the quarter-finals.

For Andreescu, the loss marks the end of a breathtaking three-month tear that saw her win 31 of 35 matches, win the BNP Paribas Open as a wild card and rise over 125 ranking spots.

Now the WTA's No.24-ranked player will rest up and start preparing for the clay-court season.

“I guess this is just a way of my body telling me that it's had enough,” the 18-year-old told reporters on Monday. “It's disappointing, but it's part of the sport.”

Andreescu had been experiencing shoulder tightness since the tournament began, but told reporters that doctors have told her that the injury is not serious and she wasn’t risking anything by playing at Miami.

“It's just so tight,” Andreescu said. “The physios and the doctor said that it's nothing too serious, but it's just -- the pain is there, and I couldn't continue today.”

All eight quarter-finals spots were claimed on Monday at Miami, as three Top 5 seeds advanced.

No.2-seeded Simona Halep knocked off Venus Williams, 6-3 6-3, while No.3-seeded Petra Kvitova defeated France’s Caroline Garcia by the same score.

Halep will face China’s Wang Qiang next, and Kvitova will square off with Ashleigh Barty.

Fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova edged Yulia Putintseva 2-6 6-3 7-5 to set an all-Czech quarter-finals with Marketa Vondrousova. Pliskova and Vondrousova have each reached at least the quarter-finals at Indian Wells and Miami—Vondrousova defeated Tatjana Maria 6-4 6-3 on Monday.

Chinese Tapei’s Hsieh Su-Wei was also a winner on Monday. The 33-year-old reached her first Premier Mandatory quarter-final with a 6-3 6-7(0) 6-2 victory over Caroline Wozniacki.

Hsieh will face Anett Kontaveit on Tuesday, and Kvitova and Barty will square off in the night session. The other two women’s singles quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday.
