Shintaro Mochizuki defeated Spain’s Carlos Gimeno-Valero to become the first Wimbledon Boys Singles champion from Japan on Sunday at SW19.

The 16-year-old, coached by Natsuo Yamanaka and trained at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, notched a 6-3 6-2 win in 61 minutes.

Mochizuki has a unique brand of tennis. He approaches the net behind his backhand and loves to use his backhand aggressively.

He won 6 of 6 serve-and-volley points and 17 of 23 points at the net.

“My coach, like Natsuo, he taught me,” said Mochizuki. “I liked coming to the net. My coach taught me, like, I'm good at that. I just practiced a lot and improved with all matches. Like my coaches gave me a lot of advice. Yeah, I like coming into the net, yeah, a lot.”

Mochizuki, talking to reporters in the Wimbledon media room during the first set of the Federer v Djokovic final, said that Roger Federer was his favorite player.

“I love watching him on TV,” he said. “I don't want to copy him, but I love watching him.”

Mochizuki joins an elite group of former Wimbledon Boys Singles champions that includes Bjorn Borg, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg and Federer himself.
